Born and raised in Massachusetts, Jaynia Matherwiez developed an early and enduring connection to the ocean, spending much of her childhood along the New England coast. Time spent in coastal communities profoundly shaped her visual sensibility and continue to inform her artistic practice. The ocean—its movement, depth, and shifting light—serves as both inspiration and subject matter in her work.

Jaynia took art classes in college, where she explored a range of artistic disciplines. She later built a career in educational publishing, integrating creative writing and visual design into her professional work. After stepping away from the workforce to focus on raising her family, she returned to creative pursuits through web design and dedicated volunteer work with several non-profit organizations, further refining her design sensibility and collaborative skills.

In 2022, Jaynia returned to art, a transition that marked a renewed and focused commitment to her studio practice. She primarily works in painting, creating abstract seascapes and intuitive abstract compositions that evoke the emotional and physical experience of water. Her palette is dominated by blues and greens, reflecting the influence of the ocean, while her use of palette knives, brushes, and mixed media techniques emphasizes texture, movement, and depth. Through layering and experimentation, her work explores the interplay between control and spontaneity, mirroring the natural rhythms of the sea.

Jaynia continues to develop her practice through ongoing exploration of materials and process. Her work appeals to collectors drawn to contemporary abstraction, coastal-inspired art, and expressive use of color and texture.
